The Philadelphia 76ers were one of the most talented teams in NBA history when they drafted Joel Embiid with the third overall pick. Four years later, after a handful of injuries and setbacks, he is finally healthy enough to play for them. The question has been asked: why isn’t Joel playing?
The “joel embiid injury” is the reason why Joel Embiid hasn’t been playing for the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers are hopeful that he will be able to return soon.
Despite missing point guard Ben Simmons and dealing with injuries and COVID-19 concerns, the Philadelphia 76ers fought to an 8–2 record. On Nov. 8, superstar center Joel Embiid became the fourth 76ers player to undergo the health and safety procedures, putting the team’s fortunes in jeopardy. He’ll be out for at least five games, which began with their 103–96 defeat to the New York Knicks at home.
Tobias Harris, Matisse Thybulle, and Isaiah Joe have previously been placed on the health and safety list. Simmons is currently recovering from mental health issues, while two-way guard Grant Riller hasn’t played this season due to surgery on his left meniscus in the summer. The 76ers have two more home games left, against the Milwaukee Bucks on November 9 and the Toronto Raptors on November 11, before heading out on a six-game road trip.
COVID-19 was shown to be present in Joel Embiid.
Joel Embiid was not scheduled to play against the Knicks, according to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Philadelphia 76ers were on the front end of a back-to-back, and Embiid was playing with a painful knee. On opening night, he clashed with Jonas Valaninas of the New Orleans Pelicans. On Nov. 1, Embiid sat out Philadelphia’s victory against the Portland Trail Blazers to rest his knee.
Embiid is the second player from the 76ers to get the infection. Harris, like Embiid, is completely immunized, but he’s been exhausted and congested.
Things aren’t looking good for Embiid, either, according to Coach Doc Rivers:
“I mean, he’s not doing so well right now.” He’s having trouble with it. It reminds me a lot of Tobias. That’s all I have to say about it.”
Rivers adopted a diplomatic approach to playing without Embiid.
“Are you sure you want to ask that?” Rivers remarked. “You don’t have Joel with you.” He’s a competent player. So, you know, we really don’t have a lot of numbers. Clearly, this is a hard task. That’s exactly how I’d want our people to think about it. If you can pull these games off, you’ll have a great tale to tell. And that’s how I’d want us to think.”
Unfortunately, the 76ers have a history of overcoming adversity in the absence of their great center.
Joel Embiid’s health is a bit of a mystery.

Joel Embiid was drafted third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014, but his NBA debut was delayed by two years due to a fractured foot and the issues that followed.
The defeat to New York on Nov. 8 was Embiid’s second game of the season. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, he’ll miss at least five games. Philadelphia should expect to see Embiid in uniform late next week while on a trip to the west coast.
Despite never missing less than 18 games in a season, he is a three-time All-NBA and All-Defensive pick. In his NBA career, he has missed 297 of a possible 566 games since being selected.
Despite missing 21 games last season, Embiid finished second in the NBA MVP voting behind Denver Nuggets center Nikola Joki, his best finish in his career. Embiid is averaging a career-high 4.0 assists to go along with 21.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 30.9 minutes per game this season, despite his shooting struggles.
He’s shooting 43.5 percent overall, but 39.4 percent from three-point range, which is the highest number of his career.
In 51 games last season, he averaged 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.0 steals.
One bit of good news came in for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Danny Green returned to the starting lineup after a three-game absence in the defeat to the Knicks. Green returned from a hamstring injury to play 30 minutes and score eight points on 3-of-9 shooting.
Andre Drummond scored 14 points and grabbed a season-high 25 rebounds in his second start in place of Joel Embiid. It was his biggest total since collecting 28 for the Detroit Pistons against the Brooklyn Nets on Feb. 7, 2018, in his 85th game with at least 20 rebounds.
The Philadelphia 76ers utilized eight players upon Green’s comeback, making it the third game in a row where their bench was just three deep. Rivers’ workload must be a problem. Tyrese Maxey has averaged 41.3 minutes per game over the previous four games, while Seth Curry has averaged 36.3.
Furkan Korkmaz led the 76ers with 19 points in 40 minutes against the Knicks. Curry had a team-high 41 minutes on the floor, while Maxey had 39 minutes. Drummond appeared in 38 games. Despite shooting just 32.5 percent (13-of-40) from beyond the arc, Philadelphia leads the NBA with a 38.6 percent mark.
If there is a silver lining for the Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid in this circumstance, it is that it will allow his ailing knee to recover. While no club likes to go through this much staff turnover, it’s still early in the season. That’s also the best-case scenario, as opposed to dealing with a shorter bench during a playoff run.
